Nigerian actress to star in Ukranian movie

Omoni Oboli
Sultry Nigerian actress Omoni Oboli isn’t probably as popular as her other colleagues including the likes of Omotola, Genevieve, Ini Edo etc. Her luck has been spontaneous packages but albeit big packages. Months ago, Omoni struck her luck again with a multinational company as their new iconic figure in all advertorials, a contract worth thousands of dollars.
And no sooner had she struck the deal in the months past that another deal has come knocking, a movie project in Ukraine set to worth triples of the current amount she receives for the roles she features in making a Nigerian movie. The details of the deal is still quite sketchy,, but whatever the case, it’s a good opportunity for one of Nollywood’s own to export the talent and African brand into eastern Europe.
Would you care to have walked the same line as Omoni?

With corruption seen as the major obstacle to the growth of Nigeria, Jonathan pledged to fight corruption for the nation’s limited resources to be deployed for common growth and that he would actively promote the development of the Niger Delta region.
In his inaguration speech, he made case for technical and financial partnerships with global businesses and organizations. He said his administration portended a new era for Africa while Nigeria will lead the process for democracy and development in the continent.
“The moment is right. The signs are heart-warming. We are ready to take off on the path of sustained growth and economic development. In our economic strategy, there will be appropriate policy support to the real sector of the economy, so that Small and Medium Enterprises may thrive. Nigeria is blessed
with enormous natural wealth, and my Administration will continue to encourage locally owned enterprises to take advantage of our resources in growing the domestic economy. A robust private sector is vital to providing jobs for our rapidly expanding population. But this must be a collaborative effort,” he said.
“We must form technical and financial partnerships with global businesses and organizations. We live in an age where no country can survive on its own; countries depend on each other for economic well-being. Nigeria is no different. Returns on investment in Nigeria remain among the highest in the world. We will continue to welcome sustainable investment in our economy.
“We will push programs and policies that will benefit both local and foreign businesses, but we must emphasize mutual benefits and win-win relationships. The overall ongoing reforms in the banking and financial sectors are therefore designed to support the real sector of the economy.

Rita Dominic marvels during encounter with Nigerian president

Rita Dominic was amongst a select few celebrities and youth leaders invited by the Nigerian president for a lunch date. It was an event organized to bring various participants and stakeholders together to discuss and share ideas about the inundating challenges facing the Nigerian youth.
One after another, speaker after speaker took turns to express their opinions, discuss the issues at length and propose possible solutions. But none other speaker was more thrilling and composed than our truly Rita Dominic. She was absolutely confident and craved the audiences’ rapt attention with her breathtaking speech. Below is the full transcript:

“His Excellency Mr. President, Distinguished ladies and gentlemen;
I feel privileged to be living in a time where I can proudly say that young Nigerians are seriously advocating for a better Nigeria. Some people may disagree with me but I believe we may now have a President willing to listen to us and identify with our hopes and aspirations.
If you don’t agree, then you have to show me a past president of Nigeria who has actively pursued the youth vote? Show me a past Nigerian president who has used social networks utilized by our young people to reach out them? Show me a past president who has set aside a 200 million Dollar intervention fund dedicated to an industry that is one of the largest employers of young people in Nigeria…. I rest my case.
My name is Rita Dominic, I represent Nollywood!
I would like to thank Mr. President, for providing this low interest loan to galvanize our industry. Many young people who own production companies are depending on this loan to turn us from employees to employers, from unemployed to employed.
Rita Dominic
However, it is imperative that the people who will administer this fund understand the spirit behind your creating it in the first place. Some of us have applied for the loan but the requirement of collateral in the traditional sense is about to dash that dream. Sir, if the youth had enough collateral, we would not have needed the intervention in the first place. I respectfully request that you look into the litany of requirements that is making the loan inaccessible to the people it was created for.
One properly produced Nigerian film can involve hundreds of young people from various works of life. Apart from the actors and actresses, when making a quality film, we directly or indirectly hire production managers, accountants for budgeting and record keeping, electricians (Lighting specialists), costume designers (tailors), catering people (cooks), set and production designers, camera operators, publicity people, graphic artists, still photographers, make up people, hair stylists, production assistants who help on set but don’t forget each actor/actress will hire own PAs, film editors, boom persons and marketing companies. The list goes on and on.
Imagine that we have scores of productions going on in various parts of the country. The impact is simply amazing.
Mr. President, I am a witness to what an infusion of funds can do to elevate and empower the lives of young people. Traders in Onitsha and Aba started it 20 years ago and Nollywood became a reality, Globacom did it for 13 young people 2 years ago and it instantly increased the number of actors and actresses producing their own films. If managed properly, imagine what the 200 million dollar fund can do hundreds of young producers, what it can do for thousands of unemployed youth out there.
Let us make it happen. Continue to support youth programs. Giving such support means that you believe in the future of Nigeria. If you do, the youth will not forget for generations to come.
Thank you.”
Do you think Rita Dominic has a lot more up her sleeves than she has revealed so far?

I strive to keep up my game - Nse Ikpe Etim

Her name is Nse Ikpe Etim, a pretty, soft spoken Nigerian actress. Although she had been in Nollywood and had featured in some movies, she continued to remain away from the limelight until the breakthrough moment came with the movie ‘Guilty Pleasures’ where she played alongside Ramsey Nouah and Majid Michel. Her role in the movie was a perfect match, as she perfectly immersed into the character and played the role to excellently. Even more so was the passionate romantic moment she shared with Majid Michel which raised quite a few eyebrows and got the attention of African Movies lovers to this beautiful actress.
Recently Nse Ikpe Etim had time for an interview with Vanguard allure, a Nigerian magazine and below is the excepts of what she had to say including how movie producer Emem Isong challenged her to build confidence in her acting:

Nse Ikpe

When did you discover you had a flair for acting?
It was when I finally decided that I was going to do this; that was after “Reloaded”. But I always had a thing for Sophie Lauren and then I saw Lil Sid. I knew I wanted to be a woman like that but I wasn’t sure how it will work here. It really wasn’t a dream per se and I got into acting earlier; after I graduated from the university, just to prove a point to my mother that I could do what I wanted to do.
I was happy at first but I wasn’t satisfied. I guess because I was still in search of myself, I rushed out, got into banking and into other industries. I did radio a bit, did a bit of compere on stage. Then, I went into banking again. I also did a bit of fashion. But after Emen Isong fought with me in my kitchen; I still remember that because it was what propelled me – that and the script of “Reloaded”.
How do you mean she fought with you in your kitchen?
It was not a physical fight but she kept saying:
“It is because you are not confident enough to go into acting, that is why you keep running out.”
And, I thought to myself that how can anyone say that about me. That sort of propelled me and I took up the challenge with the script of “Reloaded” and I made it. This is where it has brought me thus far.
How did you get into “Reloaded” and what was it like being on the set for the first time?
Emem just said to me that she has a script that she was working on and she wanted me to take a look at it. When she showed it to me, it was basically to have an input because normally, as a writer and a story teller, you basically have to get fillers about what people think of your story – just to know how it will do in the market.
I told her:
“I like the story. Let’s see what we can do.”
And, I had a bit of input in “Reloaded”. Then she said to me:
“Listen, I would like you to take this character.”
And, I said no way. I am not an actor.
So, we argued about it in the kitchen; which was why she said to me that I am not confident. I am not this, I am not that. Then I said:
“Okay, let’s give it a shot.”
And yes, I was afraid. I still get scared before I go on set because I am my own competition. Nothing for me to compete with; there was nothing. It was a case of just-fresh, nothing really was there for me to compare myself to. It was scary.
And then, there was Lancelot Imasuen. There was Rita on set; though Rita has been my friend from way back. There was also Stephanie; there was Uche Jombo; there was Ini (Edo); there was Ramsey (Nouah). I have been on set with Ramsey before but it was like a whole new Nollywood. I mean, I was like fish out of water but they made me very comfortable, which I think was what helped me.
As an actor, you have experienced both worlds – on stage and on set. If you have to choose, which would you rather do?
It can’t be compared. Stage and screen are two different worlds entirely. For stage, you feel like a demi-god. You are in control of your audience. You don’t see anybody, nobody sees you. For you, it is like this is my space; you are the lord and master of the space: “Now, take me as I am!” That is stage for you.
With screen, if I dry up (drying up is like forgetting your lines), what happens is that I get corrected. On stage, there is no such thing so, if you make a mistake, you have got to blend it and it’s got to look like it is okay. So, stage needs a lot of practice and I give kudos to stage actors. I know that I will still do stage because, it is one of the things that I really love and being in control is a good thing.
Being your first after a long while on set, how did you feel being nominated for the AMAA Awards and later winning the award for Best Leading Actress at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards for your role in “Reloaded”?
For me, a nomination for the ‘African Oscars’, as I call it, is as good as a win. That recognition is second to none. What else would I be asking for? It was a first time and it was amazing. Did you see the names that were on set? I would have said:
“Take the awards back, please, to the rightful owner.”
Do you understand that that is how I felt? I think no better honour could have been bestowed on me than that. It was so amazing; I was totally speechless!
Growing up, what influenced you as a person? What motivated you to make a success of yourself and career?
I come from a close-knit family; from a family that was relatively large. Because, for me, six kids is large. We were like a family and then, losing my dad at a tender age and watching my mother being a woman that I will always love to be.
she was able to keep us together. We still go to the same church. That is rare these days. We go to the same church. We have the same beliefs. We are still in the same line; that is really hard to do. So, it is not the case of: “Oh, I am here and there, it is still like that.” Things like that have helped mould me; so when I do things, it is always about what would Martha think (that is my mother’s name).
I call her Martha when I want to piss her off and then she will laugh. I always wonder what she will think. Sometimes, I think – let my father not go and rumble in the grave and things like that. It hurts but I think it has helped me. I think that much as we say we do not want our loved ones to go, it is a formidable one that has really helped (to build) whom I have become today.
Do you think you are living your dream? Are you doing what you have always wanted to do?
If I say no now, it is because I have not yet reached the moon, literally. I will say yes, I am living my dream because I am an actor and I am doing everything I am passionate about – acting, writing, cooking. Those are the things I love (doing), so it is not a case of me doing anything because I am going to make money out of it. I am doing them because I love them and when you love them, all other things will be added unto them.
When it comes to style what influences the look you put together every time you step out of your home?
I am more bohemian in my dressing. But at the same time, because, sometimes, I can be like an ardent, I like to wear my jeans and tank top. Then, I have my designer who is constantly trying to make me a lady. When I am going out in public, Wange does a lot for me, especially if I am going out. She would say:
“You have to wear this.”
She sinks it with my personality and it works. I think my style is not fashion-based because I feel that style transcends fashion.
Women are generally into shoes, bags, jewelleries… What are you into?
I am into food!
You said you love to cook. Where did you get that from? Why cooking?
I will tell you a story that I don’t think I have told before; except to my close friends. At thirteen, my father made me pound yam and cook egusi soup. I made the soup. There was egusi on one side, water on one side and oil on another side. Then, the pounded yam had ‘co-co’ in it. My father ate the food and I saw the pain in his eyes. I said to myself I wish I could wipe that off his face.
Since then, it was a case of me trying always to impress with my food; trying to cook but I don’t eat egusi soup till tomorrow. I don’t like it.
When I left my first banking job, what I did was sit at home for a year cooking. I bought all the cookery books I could get. I was just trying to look for something in me. I went to Jo’burg for a few months as well. For about five, six months, it was all about food. And, I came back broke and looked for another bank job. By that time, it was a case of me and food. That is it.
What is your favourite?
Because I cook, I don’t have a favourite. I like everything as long as it is healthy.
How do you relax when you are not working?
My couch should best explain that; my couch potato. I love to lay on the couch a lot. I read a lot. It is as bad as reading three books at the same time, depending on my mood. Then, I play a lot of Scrabble as well. I watch soccer, I love soccer. Sometimes, I go out with friends. It is always nice to hang out with friends.
What would you love to be remembered for?
I will love to be remembered for the lives I have touched, either by making them laugh or by lending a helping hand or by just being there. Sometimes, a word of encouragement is a lot more than money and there is a lot of pain right now. I am on the board of this charity programme. It is called ‘The Empowerment Programme’. It is for young girls really.

Nse Ikpe

Here, you know we don’t talk about a lot of things that have happened to us. We love to bottle them up and this informs you; this makes you who you are in future. But when we learn to speak out, when we talk about our problems – people don’t talk about rape, people don’t talk about sexual harassment, people don’t talk about even death. They bottle them up but when a woman can talk about these things, it makes her a better woman. She is a better woman in her relationship and as a mother. For instance, sex education is not taught to a lot of kids or maybe they are beginning to talk about it now.
Talk about sexual harassment in Nollywood. What is it like? Have you ever been harassed?
I will answer you the way I answered them at Harvard. The same views I have of sexual harassment in banks, schools, hospitals, everywhere. Because we are in the limelight, everyone seems to think that it is more in our industry. It has never happened to me but I can’t say it does not happen. It is bound to happen when you have men and women together.
It can happen either way; women can harass a man, men can harass a woman. It all depends and it happens in all industries. We are not the only ones.
Do you have a role model?
My mentors are my mother, if I can be like her, I think I will be completely fulfilled. My other mentor is a neuro-surgeon, Ben Cason. He was able to become the best in his line despite his shortcomings; he was disadvantaged and he fought through it all and he is the best in his line.

Omotola on the set of her new movie in London, Amina

The actress is quietly racking up roles in quality movies that might put her in contention in the Best Actress category in the 2012 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).
On set with Alison Carol (Lara Croft)
Star actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde barely landed Lagos from Accra where she had been shooting Leila Djansi's much awaited film "Ties that Bind", when she had to jet off again for another major shoot in London.  This time, she is starring in a feature film titledAMINA alongside British Actors Wil Johnson and Vincent Reagan
There is so much secrecy surrounding the project that all we managed to get were 2 pictures from production manager Afshan Hassan.  We also gather that the film is being directed by a Uk based director Christian Ashaiku.  The film is an emotional drama about Amina who is left disillusioned that all men have to offer her is sorrow, pain and humiliation after an unplanned pregnancy at 16.  Audiences will be taken on a journey to see what it will take for Amina to date again.

Omotola, Wil Johnson and Vincent Reagan
When questioned about the production, all Omotola could say was "I feel appreciated and challenged".   The actress is quietly racking up meaty roles in quality movies that might put her in contention in the Best Actress category in the 2012 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).  Till the producers are ready to let the press in , all we can report is that Omotola is poised to achieve meaningful things this year and 2012.
Guess who the Make up Artist for this project is....A UK based International Make up Artist, Grace Ibukunoluwa of Facequizite Make up Artist.

Afrobeat is a combination of Yoruba music, jazz, Highlife, and funk rhythms, fused with percussion and vocal styles, popularized in Africa in the 1970s. Afrobeat's main creator was the Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Fela Kuti, who coined the term Afrobeat, shaped the musical structure and also the political context of the genre in Nigeria. Nigerians were first introduced to Afrobeat in 1970 when Kuti returned from a U.S tour with his group Nigeria 70 (formerly Koola Lobitos). Kuti's new sound hailed from a club that he established called the Afro-Shrine. Upon arriving in Nigeria, Kuti changed the name of his group to Fela Ransome-Kuti & Africa 70. The band maintained a five-year residency in the Afro-Shrine from 1970-75 while Afrobeat thrived among Nigerian youth.

Dele Sosimi is known for the original keyboard player of Fela Kuti's Egypt 80 for 7 years and then working as music director for Femi Kuti's Positive Force. GHETTO DREAMZ WINS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE AT LOS ANGELES MOVIE AWARDS, USA

By Ope Banwo

ANOTHER PRESTIGIOUS AWARD FOR GHETTO DREAMZ AS THE FIRST MUSICAL BIOPIC IN NIGERIA WINS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE AT THE LOS ANGELES MOVIE AWARDS, USA 2011
The management of Stingomania Entertainment, and the Producer of GHETTO DREAMZ, Barrister Ope Banwo are most pleased to announce that they have been notified by the organizers of the LOS ANGELES MOVIE AWARDS, USA 2011 that the SCRIPT for Ghetto Dreamz Movie has been awarded the Award of Excellence at this year’s Los Angeles Movie Awards, USA. This award for Script Excellence, along with the complete list of 2011 winners in all categories, has also been posted on the website of the Los Angeles Movie Awards in the USA.

This Award is a landmark achievement for Nigeria, and Nollywood as an industry, because we believe it represents the first time that a Nollywood movie script would win such a prestigious award at the prestigious USA based Los Angeles Movie Awards.

The GHETTO DREAMZ script written by Stingomania’s CEO and Producer of the movie, Barrister Ope Banwo, formed the basis for the shooting of the GHETTO DREAMZ [THE DAGRIN STORY]. Prior to production, the revised screenplay from the script was done by the Director of the movie, Mr. Daniel Ademinokan. To say that we at Stingomania Entertainment are most proud of this laudable achievement is to understate the obvious.

The entire staff of Stingomania Entertainment continues to thank and appreciate everybody involved in making the GHETTO DREAMZ movie an international phenomenon. We especially appreciate the Director, Daniel Ademinokan, who did a major revision of the script for the screenplay. We also thank the excellent cast and crew of GHETTO DREAMZ who worked tirelessly despite the different production obstacles to deliver a world class movie that is now being celebrated in far away Los Angeles. Finally, we appreciate the members of the Press for being so gracious and supportive of the movie in their reviews.

This Award represents the 5th Award for Ghetto Dreamz since its premiere in April this year. The Movie had earlier won the CITY PEOPLE EXCELLENCE AWARD for Best Upcoming Actor (for TRYBSON DUDUKOKO’s role as Dagrin), Best Upcoming Actor also from NEWS OF THE PEOPLE AWARDS, 2011,  AND GLOBAL EXCELLENCE AWARDS, 2011. The lead actor of the movie, acting in his very first movie, was also recently nominated in the Best Emerging Actor category by BEST OF NOLLYWOOD (BON) AWARDS coming up in July.

We continue to expect bigger international exploits for this first biopic for a Nigerian musician as GHETTO DREAMZ begins to make its way through different international film festivals in the coming months. For those who may not have seen this great movie, we encourage you to go out and see it at the cinemas right now. The movie is about the life and struggles of the celebrated late indigenous rapper, Olaitan Olaonipekun, a/k/a Dagrin.

The movie, currently running at different Nigerian cinemas across the country is scheduled to premiere in 20 different Nigerian campuses over the next 30 days before moving to the United Kingdom for premieres in 4 cities including Birmingham (June 18th), Dublin (July 1st), Manchester (Just 8th) and London (July 16th).

It also treats the Senior Sister Syndrome (S.S.S.) where the younger sister gets married before the older sister and there are pressures from the older sister, Africans believe that it’s a wrong thing to do and they attach serious sentiment to it.

As you are reading this, serious promotion is going on within and outside the country and Tricia, the executive producer of this concept, is leaving no stone unturned to make the premier a huge success owing to the solid arrangement on ground preceding the day. Other artistes who feature in the award-winning movie include Shan George, Alex Lopez, Ndidi Obi, Daniel Lloyd etc. Kingsley Kerry, Tricia’s hubby directed the movie.

Tricia Eseigbe was out of the country for some weeks to specially invite international soccer stars for the premier of her new flick titled Pradah is an open secret; but what you may not know is the interest the likes of Mikel Obi, Osaze, Yobo, Ikechukwu, Kanu, Pantsil, Michael Essien, John Fashanu, Ikpeba have shown towards the internationally recognized movie, Pradah.
