SoulKate Vol 7: Vehicular and two wheeler madness in Lagos

By Kate Henshaw

Driving to and fro from my different locations for the past one week and I pondered why some people who drive( be it drivers or the car owner) behave like mad people who have no idea of what it takes to be on the road.

There are clear markings and signs on the
roads which are totally ignored . Do they not know that these signs are there for a reason? One of such signs is the zebra crossing. Woe betide you if you as a pedestrian think that the zebra crossing is meant for you, oh no! Definitely not! It is just there for show and unless you are given a chance to walk on it, kindly wait by the side walk till at least the traffic light indicates red and you are safe to go across the road.

Driving towards the toll gates on the Lekki -Epe expressway, there are lanes marked out as you approach them but it is surprising to still see some cars before you get to the barrier trying to squeeze in ahead of you when they could have queued behind. Smarty pants who feel that you are the fool for driving properly. Or is it the car that comes across all the way from the left lane into the extreme right lane and just nips in before you into the barrier!
What are the rules with regards to the roundabout? Surely the car already in the roundabout has the right of way and the oncoming car on the right should give way, not so? Oh! but not in Lagos. It is the fastest and smartest formula one racer that gets ahead and they speed past you with a look of mockery on their faces! With the construction of the new link bridge leading to Falomo from Ozumba Mbadiwe, traffic has eased up on that stretch of the road and I see that the traffic authorities have had to put down cones down the side to stop people from coming right to front to cut in but still they do.

Sometimes I wish I was a traffic warden! I would fill up my quota of offenders faster than you can say speed! There would be no begging me for mercy and my popularity would beat that of Madam Agnes the very dedicated traffic warden at the traffic lights by the law school. I have seen her shake her stick quite vigorously at bad drivers who narrowly escape her with a cross look on her face.
The two wheeler ones called Okadas are not left out. They are a necessary evil I have come to find out but who regulates how you go about getting a license to ride one? They have been and continue to be a menace and I daresay that the authorities do not just care about the experience of the rider but about the monies they collect from them at every point. Driving along Ajose Adeogun 2weeks ago, I could see them being stopped by some guys wearing vests and extorting money from them? Where does this money go to, I wonder and who are these men.?

What happened to the law about helmets? Did it get forgotten or it is not longer the rave as more than enough helmets have been sold by the contractor who got the job to supply and those who have benefitted from passing the bill, thereby getting a cut from the contractor.
They have rules of their own, the traffic lights do not concern nor apply to them as they drive straight through and the traffic wardens just look on thoroughly exhausted and lackadaisicasl about it all. How many can you really stop and prosecute? They are like a swarm of bees and they sting you constantly when they bash and scratch your car trying to go through a very tiny gap between two cars, and in so doing break your side mirror. Many people I know have complained about them but there seems to be no organizing the chaos they bring to the roads. I guess we continue to suffer and smile while we mend the scratches and dents in our vehicles.

On another note, it is very disheartening to note the lack of street lights on the bridge all the way through from the 3rd Mainland till you get to the Alfred Rewane exit and then you get some respite. It is quite alarming and dangerous and each time I have to ply that road at night I say my prayers for the good lord to lead me through to the end of the tunnel.
It is a pleasure, however, and law abiding, to see some motorists stop at the traffic lights at night even when there is no traffick police watching. Doing the right thing at the right time is not that hard. It means that you care about your life and it does reflect in your lifestyle.

Finally, I bid farewell to a thespian of note, a father, humor merchant, erudite communicator , dogged, hardworking and all round happy go lucky man, Sam Loco Efe as he begins the final journey to the other side this week. There can only be one and it was a privilege to work with you. I say boy! Goodnight Uncle Sam!

BlackBerry Crash Continues To Affect Millions

BlackBerry users across the world have been left without email or text services for a second day due to an unexplained fault.
Customers in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, India, Brazil, Chile and Argentina have now reported problems with their devices.
They have been venting their fury at the lack of service on Twitter and other social networking sites.
BlackBerry Crash Continues To Affect Millions
One customer tweeted: "You realise that sending a letter in a bottle and putting it in the Thames is more reliable than a BlackBerry ."
Another joked: "What did one BlackBerry user say to the other BlackBerry user? Nothing."
The server problems are believed to stem from a data base in Slough and started on Monday morning.
However, it is not known what specifically caused the fault.
Manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) had given the all-clear on Tuesday morning after the first problems.
But they struck again later, leaving users unable to access emails or the internet or use messaging services.
RIM said in a statement: "Some users in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, India, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina are experiencing messaging and browsing delays.
"We are working to restore normal service as quickly as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."
Regular voice-calling services appear not to have been affected, and the problem seems to be limited to personal rather than business contracts.
Mobile operators in the UK including T Mobile and Orange posted messages on their websites referring customers experiencing difficulties to the manufacturer.
Vodafone said: "Research in Motion (RIM) is currently investigating the issue as a priority to restore services as soon as possible."
TV critic Ian Hyland tweeted: "All we need now is for i-phones to start playing up and we'll have the dream headline: 'Apple and Blackberry Crumble.'"

SOULKATE VOL 5: AIRBORNE TALES

By Kate Henshaw

Okada Air, Sosoliso Air line, Kabo Air, ADC Airlines, Bellview Airlines, Nigerian Airways; these were just a few of our local carriers in years past.

In my view, Bellview Airlines was the leader of all these airlines. I remember not a few passengers being left behind for arriving even a minute after takeoff time. They would see their supposed flight takeoff into the skies right before their very eyes! They paid a price for their tardiness. It was quite a statement. No excuses were taken. You were either on time or left behind!
Now we have quite a plethora of Airlines in Nigeria, all ripping off the passenger and not offering even the basic service of departing on time. I do not know how many times I have heard over the speakers “due to operational reasons flight dg 123 has been delayed or cancelled”.

Destination
I recall a few months ago sitting in an airport for about eight hours before I could depart to my destination. I was helpless as to what to do. I slept, woke up, had lunch and slept off again. Who even operates the PA system? One can hardly hear what they were saying. They sounded either like a sleepy child reluctant to get out of bed for school or like a drunk and most times the pronunciations were appalling. This is the state we now find ourselves and I dare say, we take it on the chin and we sit there as the only other option is to go by road and we all know that story, don’t we? Why are we short-changed at every turn? You pay full fares for a flight and then you were asked to buy your own snacks?
Abroad, Easy Jet does so because their fares are cheap and so they get the volume of passengers and then make them pay for food, drinks and headset should they choose to watch a film and by so doing still make their money without the passenger feeling cheated. Here do we care? Who is the passenger to dare complain about services? You might even get arrested for daring to complain or be beaten up in the process like a friend of mine, Abubakar. Does the passenger even know his or her rights? I do know that when I pay for something, I get the exact thing I paid for, nothing less.
Now there is a charge called the Passenger Service Charge. I laughed when I saw it the last time I travelled. What service and why charge me after I have paid my fare? It’s beggars belief. Our airports are like ancient store houses; even the ‘new’ MM2 has lost its look already.

Hole
I wish I could paste pictures here, I walked into the toilet once and the stench was like a pit latrine and by the time I was done, I could not find where to flush the toilet as there was a hole in the wall in place of the flushing system! Appalling! We kept grumbling and not taking a stand.
I remember a particular airline would land and then drop passengers’ baggage outside and we would rush out, struggle with each other to each pick up our bags. To them they had brought us to our destination and that was that. We give excuses for inept and insensitive people who are supposed to know their jobs but do not perform them. I remember landing at the International airport from Nairobi and we could not access the immigration hall as the door was locked and the person who was to have opened it was nowhere to be seen. We waited for at least 15mins before he leisurely strolled down and when accosted by me, a fellow passenger told me to calm down that at least he still came! What do you say to that? No wonder we do not get any response from those who are supposed to serve us as we always made up excuses for them.

Assignment
We have a new Aviation Minister, and the first assignment is that we are slammed with an over 60 percent hike in fares, never mind that the flight ticket is more expensive than the yet to be implemented minimum wage in some states.. I shudder to think when we will take our destiny in our own hands, when we will have Ministers and Leaders who will truly serve us collectively rather than the recorded successes of a few and the majority acting like they do not care nor give a damn.
It was however a joy to behold and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised that on my way to Port Harcourt last month, the flight I boarded, took off on time with good service and it was only 5 minutes late on the return journey. The airline was Dana Air. I will keep an eagle eye out for erring airlines and will criticise bad service where it is given. Sort of a name and shame thing and hopefully things will change. God helps those who help themselves.

No daughter of mine marries without University education – King Sunny Ade

By Ogbonna Amadi Entertainment Editor
Although he is one of the biggest and most influential musicians in Africa, King Sunny has one regret, his l ack of University education.
Pained by this short -coming, he has forbidden his daughters from getting married without acquiring a University degree.
He bared his mind to Saturday Vanguard at the wedding of one his daughters’ Ruth, last Sunday in Ondo, Ondo State and advised would- be suitors to steer clear of his daughters who are yet to meet his expectations.
Why did you decide to make your daughter wed in a low- key event?
The request was hers. She told me that she just wanted to go to the registry and have a small reception. I had to start calling my friends and apologising that we are not having an elaborate wedding. Besides, I have other things to celebrate , like my 65th birthday and my mum’s one year remembrance. So, there was no need to invite the whole world to the wedding and call them again a few days later to come for my mum’s anniversary and my birthday.
How much do you miss your mum?
I miss her very much. Although she warned me not to cry when she passes on or when any person dies, I have tried my best not to cry, but I can’t help it. On the day she was buried, I cried and on the first year anniversary of her death when I was about laying the wreath, I realised that I was alone and that my mum is gone and that my adviser is gone. I cried too. I thank God that my mum died at a ripe age but I still miss her.
I still have daughters and sons but my appeal to you guys is that if you want to come and ask my daughters’ hand in marriage, I beg you, let them acquire University education before you marry them. I cherish education, so much because I didn’t have much education.
Do you still want to have more kids?
It’s not that I still want to have more kids but if I decide not to raise kids anymore and one of my wives insists on having one, whom am I to say no. But the truth is, I have begged my wives not to get pregnant any more. I have grand children that are up to 16years and very soon, I will become a great grand pa and you don’t expect a great -grand father to continue to father kids.
We learnt that Ademola Records based in Oyingbo, Lagos is now the major distributor of your old works. Is it true?
king Sunny Ade
Well you are right, because I was formerly with NIRA and since the agreement between us elapsed and I found a new and reliable ally in Ademola records, I decided to give my works to him. Apart from the distributions, it will also help to curb piracy.
How many albums did you give to him?
I gave him all my oldies.
What of the ones released by TYC owned by the Late Bolarinwa Abioro?
Well, the case is still in court so I can’t speak on that. But as far as all my oldies are concerned, the sole distributor is Ademola records. And to make the job easier, my company is the one printing the album sleeves to avoid any problem.
What is the duration of the agreement between you and Ademola records?
It is a year agreement with an option that if he performs, it could be renewed.
As a visiting lecturer to Obafemi Awolowo University, what was your first day in the classroom like?
It was interesting because rather than teaching ,I was taught. The students had done their research work on me and had an insight into what they expected from me. First they had entertained me on stage and I did the same for them.
At 65 how do you feel?
I thank God for my life and I thank God day in, day out because someone had predicted that I’d die before I attained the age of 60. I thank God I’m 65 today.
Are you planning to retire soon?
You can’t retire from music unless you want to retire from active stage shows. But I’m praying to God for strength because you and my fans will not allow me to quit active stage show.
How does it make you feel that none of your children is playing juju music ,instead they prefer hip- hop and other genre of music?
I did not inherit music from my father. By playing music, I became a rebel in the family and I damned the consequence. So, I don’t want any of my children to damn my own kind of consequence. Now I make bold to tell you that those that went to hip- hop are back to juju music.
And how do you feel seeing your colleagues in music dropping the guitar?
As far as KSA is concerned, I still play the guitar. So , whoever does not play, it is his or her own problem. The difference is that I hardly play the guitar at shows but at concerts, it is a matter of must.
Sometime, don’t you feel embarrassed when you play at the wedding of those you played at their naming ceremonies? .
There is one thing I appreciate in transport business, especially those that ply in the Eastern axis of the country. There is a particular one that has the slogan ‘the young shall grow’. So I am presently playing for third generation now and I pray that I will be able to play for the fourth generation. Let me give you an example. A young boy saw me about 16years ago and said King, you will play at my wedding but the mum almost slapped him. But I stopped her and said that is his wish and recently I played at his wedding that shows consistency and God’s favour.
