T-R-A-G-E-D-Y: Nollywood Loses Another Veteran Actor To Death

This is not the best of time for the motion world in Nigeria, which is called Nollywood by stakeholders, as it has lost another veteran actor, David Ihezie, to the cold hands of death.

The actor died yesterday at his Enugu home, after suffering from Arthritis for some time now.

Confirming this was the Enugu State Chairman of Actors' Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Ofiafulugu Mbaka, who said it was unfortunate the veteran actor passed on.

In his words, "yes, David Ihezie has passed on. He died yesterday at his home. He has been suffering from Arthritis, an illness known with the aged."

David Ihezie was in his 70s before he passed on yesterday. His remains has been deposited at a Medical Centre in Enugu. We pray God grants the family of the departed the gratitude to bear the loss.

8 killed in Kano bomb attacks, gunfire

KANO, (AFP) – A series of coordinated bomb attacks targeting security forces and gunfire in  the city Friday killed at least eight people, including a suicide bomber at a police office.

The city of Kano, the largest in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim north, erupted in chaos, with some 20 explosions heard and gunfire ringing out as eight police and immigration offices or residences were targeted.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the violence, though previous such attacks in Nigeria’s north have been blamed on Islamist group Boko Haram.

Police confirmed eight areas had been targeted, including state police headquarters and a regional police base. A secret police office was also hit along with a passport office and immigration building.

“The police have commenced investigation and therefore use this medium to call for calm among the residents of Kano as police are doing their best to bring the situation under control,” a statement said.

It labeled the attackers “hoodlums” and spoke of seven casualties. Police spokesmen gave varying explanations of whether the statement meant seven were killed or if some were wounded.

The shocking attacks, with Kano having escaped the worst of the violence blamed on Boko Haram in recent months, left residents fleeing neighbourhoods and fearing what would come next.

Those killed included a local journalist, three police officers, three immigration officers and a suicide bomber, various sources said. The state government imposed a 24-hour curfew until further notice.

“We have lost three of our men in the attack,” said local immigration spokesman Mohammed Kanoma.

“They were personnel at the passport office. They were shot dead by the attackers during the attack on a nearby police station.”

A senior police source said the suicide blast occurred at a regional police headquarters, adding three officers and the bomber died. A journalist for local Channels TV was also reported killed.

“Scary. Multiple explosions at different spots targeting security agencies in Kano today,” Yushau Shuaib, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency said in a text message.

“Rescue workers evacuating victims to hospitals. No official casualty figures for now.”

An emergency official in Kano said he was trying to access affected areas, but roads were blocked.

“There are so many of these heavy blasts around the town,” said Abubakar Jibril.

A Red Cross official said it was not safe for them to go out into the city.

An AFP journalist heard what sounded to be some 20 explosions coming from at least two neighbourhoods in the city. Smoke could be seen billowing from the areas.

The loud explosions caused chaos, with motorcycles and cars fleeing the areas.

“It’s terrifying where we are now,” one resident said. “Bombs are going off inside the police headquarters, and then shootings between police and some gunmen.”

A resident in Marhaba district told of a fierce gun battle, adding: “Now my dress is drenched in blood because I had to help carry someone shot in the shootout.”

President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency on December 31 in parts of four states hard hit by attacks blamed on Boko Haram.

Kano is not included in the state of emergency and has not been hit by any of the recent major attacks, most of them having occurred in the country’s northeast.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation and largest oil producer, is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.

The state of emergency has not stopped attacks, and the areas targeted have spread beyond the locations covered by the decree.

The limitations of the Nigerian authorities were recently highlighted when the alleged mastermind of a Christmas day attack outside a church that killed 44 people escaped police custody in suspicious circumstances.

Attacks specifically targeting Christians have also given rise to fears of a wider religious conflict in the country, with Christian leaders warning they will defend themselves. Some have even evoked the possibility of civil war.

However, attacks blamed on Boko Haram have included a wide range of targets, including Muslims.

The group also claimed responsibility for the August suicide bombing of UN headquarters in the capital Abuja that killed 25 people.

Channels TV loses reporter in Kano Attacks

Television was among the people killed in the multiple bombs experienced in Kano Friday.

Channels TV last night officially confirmed the death of the reporter Enenche Akogwu.

The 31-year-old reporter was shot by unidentified gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, outside the Kano state Government House while in the line of duty.

Akogwu graduated Benue State University in 2004 and joined Channels Television as a reporter in the nation’s capital city of Abuja, two years ago. He was later made the station’s correspondent in Kano.

Enenche Akogwu has been covering the troubled northern region.

He was the winner of Channels Television’s 2011 Chairman’s award and was honoured at the station’s end of the year celebration.

Akogwu had only returned to Kano two days ago after spending some time in Lagos.

Channel management said it was ‘deeply saddened by the death of their courageous reporter’.

Nigeria quadruplets score World first, bagging Masters degrees from same university, same day

For a Nigerian family, it is the finest hour and an amazing moment of history and proud achievement.

‘The quadruplets were cynosure of all eyes recently when they simultaneously graduated from Warwick University in Coventry, United Kingdom,  bagging Masters degree in their respective courses of choice.

It was certainly a big celebration for members of the family who had visited Coventry to celebrate their graduation in the company of friends and admirers

The quadruplets were handed their well-deserved degree certificates from the same university on the same day.

They are all 23-year-old , identical, healthy and retain the greatest love ever existed despite their identical feature and same age parade.

Similar featured sisters Tokunboh and Temi were the oldest by four minutes on their birthday, while identical brothers, Tobi and Tolu,were all smiles as family celebrated with them graduating from Warwick University with Master Degrees each.

The lucky lads and their pretty sisters were all in the same bond of love and unity as they radiate smiles, ambition, confidence and great hope, still nursing the ambition of more laurel in education.

Tokunboh graduated with Masters Degree in manufacturing and engineering and Temi, Tobi and Tolu all gained an each  MSC  in management from Warwick Business School.

‘The fact we all chose to study at the University of Warwick was a natural decision,’ says Tobi, who thinks a bit of sibling rivalry is essential for success.

‘We are a close-knit family and were all attracted by the strength of the courses on offer.

‘We all gravitated to similar courses because we’ve always been interested in business and management and our father is a successful businessman in Nigeria.’

Chief (Mrs) Yemisi Agunbiade-Sanusi who is a personal friend of the family said the quadruplets should be celebrated by Nigerian government as a pride of Africa.

“The Quads are our shinning stars who have brought glory to the Black Race”, she said.

“Their wonderful story and brilliant achievement should be an inspiration to other Young People that in life , with determination and will power, the sky is the Limit in building a life career”
She advised the Nigerian government to recognise them for academic award as a positive inspiration for youth motivation and ambition.

She added:”Their unique story should be a source of great joy and pride to Nigerians and the Black Communities at large .
Chief Sanusi, a Charity worker and youth motivator of high note enjoined African women in the United Kingdom to dedicate more time for the future of their children as the quadrupulet’s story is an indication that Black parents can excellently train their children and are capable to successfully overcome all foreign land’s obstacle and challenges .

The quads, originally from Lagos, Nigeria, have been living in the UK since the age of seven when they began boarding schools.

Since leaving university the wonder kids have all landed top city jobs in the United Kingdom.

Tokunboh is due to start working for RBS in London later this year, Temi, who interned at Santander over the summer, has been offered a permanent position with the bank, and Tolu is due to start working for one of the ‘Big 4′ accountancy firms in the City.

Our parents are four times as proud of us,’ added Tobi, who is mulling over two offers from two major City firms.

Nigeria Labour Congress, suspends strike, accepts N97 per litre

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and its allies, Trade Union Congress and Civil Society Groups have suspended the nationwide industrial action which commenced last Monday to protest the increase in the price of fuel from N65 to N141

The National Presidents of NLC and TUC respectively, Messrs Abdulwahed Omar and Peter Esele announced the suspension of the strike at a press conference in  Abuja, on Monday.

It will be recalled that NLC and TUC have called for mass action/ protest against the removal of fuel subsidy which resulted in the increase in the the pump price of petroleum products.

With this announcement suspending the strike, it means that Labour leaders have accepted the N97 per litre of fuel as fixed by the federal government.

Meanwhile, workers, traders and every other Nigerian can now go about their lawful businesses.

Kate Henshaw Goes Tough On Nigerian Government

The latest tension raised by the removal of fuel subsidy on the first day of 2012 seems not having any traces of being dowsed soon.

The issue has had many stakeholders in Nollywood come out to take a stand on the matter after being labeled as a body that supported President Jonathan. Kate Henshaw has also spoken openly on the matter.

While speaking on a TV programme, Kate was vehement in her argument, pointing out that the government caused the present situation for itself.

According to the actress, she asked, “What has government done for us? I just want them to pin point one thing they have done for us.

“I can’s drink water from the tap, I don’t have good roads to drive on, no light, no good hospitals and I am 40 years old, what do we have?”
Speaking further in anger, this mother of one said, “I am holding my government accountable for my life in this country to provide me with basic amenities. Why would the President say we should live with the problem of Boko Haram?

“The fuel subsidy was the last straw that broke the camel’s back. They want to take the last comfort away from us and never expected a revolt. You cannot take away from people who don’t have.”

One of the ways the government runs it expenses, Kate Henshaw advised the government to take caution. “They need to cut down on their expenses and wastages. Nigeria does not belong to 10,000 people but 150 million people.

“We need to know what they use our money for. Do they need to spend our money to do birthday parties outside Nigeria? Do they need so much money to celebrate our own independence when there are people hungry? You need to make them comfortable in their country.”

Kate also pointed out that what the government needs to do is to earn the trust of the people and not force Nigerians to follow its policies with questioning from Nigerians.

“What have they done with the money they have gotten from the subsidy removal of diesel and kerosene some years back? Hello, can they answer that?

“What have they used the money for to make our lives better? It has disappeared in the air just like the cabals that cannot be seen, they are spirits. The government broke the table of discussion and dialogue with the people.

“I watch how old people who have served the country suffer to get what belongs to them. Will the money they get from the subsidy removal suddenly provide all the things that we need?” Kate concluded.

Police officer killed a man in Lagos Protest

 Trouble broke yesterday at Abatan area of Ogba, Lagos State when a police officer allegedly identified as John Okafor was reported to have shot a teenage boy yet to be identified.

According to reports available to Femtej Kreations Media, the middle aged boy was shot dead by a policer reported to be a Divisional Police Officer (DPO). The boy was said to be at a news stand with other people reading newspapers at the newspaper vendor's stand at Ogba when they were hit by stray bullets.

He was said to be shot by the police along with three other people who were rushed to the hospital by some people around while the boy died instantly. His remains was displayed at Pen Cinema police station in Agege, Lagos by some angry youths.

Reports say that he was not part of those protesting with The Labour and other society groups. The police that Killed him had been arrested already.

Jonathan Inaugurates 1,100 Mass Transit Buses

President Goodluck Jonathan Sunday inaugurated 1,100 of 1,600 mass transit buses at the Eagles Square, Abuja, as part of the palliative measures he promised Nigerians to cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy.

 Jonathan said governors of the 36 states were absent at the formal launch of the scheme because he had asked them to remain in their states to monitor and work with security agencies as the strike called by labour unions over the subsidy removal begins today.

“Today, we are formally launching a mass transit programme and I have to emphasise that we are not inaugurating buses but we are launching a mass transit programme for Nigeria.

 The Federal Government is involved, the state governments are involved, local governments are involved, the Central Bank of Nigeria is involved, several commercial banks are involved and of course, transport unions as well as manufacturers and importers of mass transit vehicles.

“Governors are not here because of what everybody is afraid of, the announced protest by some societies. We said every governor must be on ground in the state so that they would be able to work with security agencies to maintain law and order in their states,” Jonathan explained.

 He also said the scheme was not put in place because of the removal of subsidy as “deregulation or no deregulation, we need a mass transit scheme” in order to bring down cost of transportation, pointing out that the increase in the cost of transportation due to the subsidy removal was an over-reaction to the policy and regretted commuters were being made to bear the brunt.

The president noted that wagons and small buses were not suitable for mass transit and therefore makes the cost high, hence the desire to introduce the mass transit buses which he said were not being bought or run by the government.
He said the funds were provided to bulk-purchase the buses to push down the prices and make them cheaper for the managers, adding, “Federal Government is not buying buses, we are subsidising mass transit.”

 Jonathan, who appealed to Nigerians to be patient as the pains engendered by the deregulation of the downstream sector would be temporary, said that the policy would usher in an enduring gain that would transform the economy.

He said the reason the country does not have a cheap mass transit system was because the framework had not been right but pointed out that Vice-President Namadi Sambo and the governors, on his directive, were meeting to fashion out an enduring framework that would at least push down transportation cost to the pre-subsidy removal rate.

The president used the occasion to lament the use of social media to misinform Nigerians and build up anger, pointing out that even while he was launching the programme, text and Black berry messages were being circulated that he was in South Africa with a very large delegation.

He vowed not to inflict pains on Nigerians as he would be offending God to do so after being massively voted for by the electorate.
He counselled Nigerians to stop exploiting the situation, saying that vehicles which use diesel which was deregulated five years ago, still increased prices which was unfair, adding, “The doubling of fares is not real. It is a reaction of people who perceive that government deregulation programme is anti-people and to vent their anger, they just raise their prices.”

 Speaking earlier, Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, said the Federal Government had earlier provided N10 billion revolving loan through the Urban Development Bank with five per cent interest rate, to push through the scheme.

He said the loan had now been increased to N15 billion and tenured for 60 days and above.

 Aganga said the government’s intervention would make the fares affordable, adding that the buses were procured with local producers in mind as it would increase employment by 30 per cent while adding to the economy and reducing fares at the same time.

He said an analysis of the rate of fuel price increase which was a component of the transportation input amounted to 26 per cent and the increase of 100 per cent in cost was not commensurate to the price increase in fuel.

 Aganga said maintenance agreement with manufacturers for 10 years to avoid the vehicles packing up had been signed, while spares would be allowed without duties as the government would assist in everywhere possible to push the transport fares down.

A communiqué issued by transport operators after their meeting with Aganga and read by their National Chairman, Alhaji Nadi Usman Yasik, said they were in support of the removal of fuel subsidy and that an additional fund should be made available to them to procure buses at zero per cent interest rate which would enable them reduce fares by 20 per cent.

Yasik also demanded duty waivers on importation of spare parts and buses while school children in their uniforms and the elderly would be granted reduced fares on interstate routes.

A new year dawned on us with the announcement of increase in pump pricesof petrol (PMS) from Naira65 to between Naira140 and Naira200! Wow! I was not the only one who wondered and said “wait a minute, were we not told April?” What happened to the talks that were ongoing to debate whether we as the masses of Nigerian wanted it or not? What about exhausting all channels and levels of dialogue before the implementation? It seemed that was a decoy meant to keep all attention on it while the govt had already made its decision on the matter.

Blackberry broadcast messages started flying around about the insensitivity, cruelty and devious nature of our leaders/ government whom we voted in to serve us and look after us and lead us right. Calculations were being made about whether really there was ever a subsidy in the first place and also why the govt did not feel the need to reduce its own expenditure seeing that the cost of running govt was at an all time high. After listening to the Minister of Labour on television the other day, it was clear he did not think he was a Nigerian as he kept on referring to the impending strike proposed by NLC and TUC as bringing more hardship on “them” rather than us while referring to us, the average Nigerian. It saddens my heart that the government of this country think they lead dullards who cannot rationalise and think for themselves. That we agreed to be led by the nose for so long was so that we would give each successive govt the benefit of doubt as to their ability to roll out policies that will benefit the populace as opposed to a select few. As things stand now, we have nowhere else to go but to push back. As I have mentioned before, the world around us is changing.

Amidst all the tension within the populace and a growing sense of unrest, we then received messages about impending black out on Blackberry Instant messaging services by govt who had prevailed on the NCC to do so in a bid to stop Nigerians communicating with themselves on the situation but it turned out to be untrue as a leading telecommunications network, MTN sent out messages denying it. A lot of rumours are flying around, accusations and counter accusations; it seems there is no end in sight with the strike kicking off on Monday the 9th of January. The burden is on the govt to show that their intentions towards us are honourable and sincere but they have burntthat bridge already by springing this jack in the box on us.
We are told that fuel subsidy must go so that our future will be secure and also guarantee that our children will enjoy our beloved country. We are told that the money saved from the subsidy will be channelled to areas of greater need in our society and that a committee has been set up to monitor the savings. We are equally told that the Fed Govt has ordered 1600 buses from abroad as palliatives for the harsh condition the removal of subsidy has brought. Hello...? The buses are meant for how many Nigerians? Do we park our cars at home since we cannot fuel them and all pile into the buses with our children to our different destinations? Do we then eat the buses? Pay the children’s’ school fees with them? Settle our hospital bills with them? Always we put the cart before the horse. We borrow western ideas, do not carry out a proper feasibility study on how it would thrive here and then we turn it on its head hoping it would still produce the same result, case in point the lekki toll.

Still there is no answer as to why our refineries cannot function as they should be. Why we keep wasting money to export our crude oil for refining and then return it to sell to ourselves the producers of the oil itself. It is mindboggling. It beggars belief. I would liken it to a farmer who plants yams, harvests it and sends it off to a restaurant to be peeled, washed and returned to him as pounded yam to be eaten by him!
Different theories abound about some masterminds living up to their threat of making the nation ungovernable for the President, what with the Christmas day bombings and the never ending killings in some parts of the north. The much talked petrol cabal is also being blamed for this uprising and using the ill gotten gains from subsidy to fight the govt on its removal. How about transparency on the part of the govt? Compassion for the multitude rather than an I don’t care attitude, do -your -worst.

Yet to be implemented is the minimum wage salary which is now like a drop in the ocean considering the hike being experienced in the country. It is now totally impossible for that amount to do anything worthwhile. Unless we as a people begin to make these electoral positions unattractive in terms of monetary rewards, the right people will never get in there.There is no need to say “Happy New year” anymore because we all know that except for the fact that those of us reading this article are still alive, we are far from happy.
