‘We’ll celebrate Esiri, not mourn him’ - Segun Arinze

By Admin
A former President of the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria, Segun Arinze, and film director, Fidelis Duker, have urged their colleagues in Nollywood to celebrate Justus Esiri, rather than feel sad about his death.

Justus Esiri
Esiri died on Monday night at the age of 71 after a brief battle with an illness said to be related to diabetes.

In separate interviews with the PUNCH on Thursday, both of them described the late actor as a role model to younger artists, especially those who were opportune to work with him at different times.

“Those who have worked with Esiri were always surprised to learn that he was warm and fun to be with. He did a lot to bring honour and prestige to Nollywood. Apart from that, he was a polished and likeable actor. Such a man should be celebrated and not just mourned. We will surely miss him. But then, we have to celebrate him because he has left a legacy behind,” Arinze said.

Recalling his experience with the departed actor, Duker said, “Esiri was a very brilliant Thespian. Although he did not study drama in the university, he was very active as an actor and gave his entire life to creative production. He was so professional that he never really bothered about financial reward.

“When he was given the Best Supporting Actor award during the 2007 edition of AMAA, he didn’t even know that the award came with a cash prize of N1m. I had to take the cheque to him in Lagos and he was shocked to learn that all that money belonged to him. His humility touched me and I have never forgotten that moment.”

Duker described Esiri as disciplined, straight-forward, self-effacing and very humble. “Rather than feel sad about his death, I think we should celebrate him. He deserves it,” he said.

In a similar development, one of the sons of the late actor, Afro pop star Onoriode, aka Dr. Sid, reportedly told NET on Thursday there was no point feeling said about his father’s death.

“He lived well. His life is being studied in universities in the UK. He lived to be 70, and anything else after 70 is a gift. So there’s really nothing to be sad about,” he was quoted as saying.

When our correspondent contacted Dr. Sid on the telephone for his reaction to his father’s death, he declined to comment on it till burial arrangements had been concluded.

Retail technology – what’s ‘in store’ for the future?

By Admin

With the increasing popularity of online shopping, high-street stores are losing out. The rise of e-commerce is having a negative impact on many retailers who will need to evolve to compete with online businesses.
The high-street could be given a new lease of life if it became more technologically advanced through the use of innovative retail technology.
Retailers who fail to keep up with technological advances, risk losing out to both e-commerce and those retailers who are prepared to invest in the latest technology.

Products in the stores of the future could become ‘smart’ and ‘virtual’.

So what could be expected in the ‘store of the future’?

cost value
Radio frequency ID (RFID) tags attached to individual items used in conjunction with mobile technology, could revolutionise the supply chain and transform the payment experience.
As an RFID tag is unique it will be possible to detect when an item has been removed from the shelf, paid for, discarded somewhere in the store or taken out of the store without payment. Shop lifting could become a thing of the past for those high-street stores prepared to invest in retail technology.
With near field communication (NFC) chips, smart phones could become payment and store tracking devices. While in the store shoppers could be sent vouchers, product suggestions, information on special offers or loyalty rewards. The retailer could have the opportunity to tempt customers with special offers to boost sales.

Recipe suggestions from a ‘smart cart’?

The shopping carts of the future may be equipped with LCD screens or tablet PCs and a control panel. The ‘smart cart’ could then use RFID tags to scan items as they are added or removed.
In addition it is possible that the cart of the future could incorporate an item locator, suggest the fastest route around the store and even make recipe suggestions. Although perhaps a shopping cart is perhaps not best placed to help the nation decide what to eat for dinner.

Shopping from a ‘virtual shelf’ would end space limitations.

Shopping from the ‘virtual shelf’ could overcome a store’s space limitations. The idea is to have a touch-sensitive display with the store’s inventory, a smart phone using image-recognition technology could then scan and order the item. Virtual shelves could be located and accessed anywhere and not just in-store, allowing consumers to shop anywhere at any time.

Waiting at the checkout – a thing of the past?

By adopting RFID tag retail technology, stores could end waiting in line at the checkout. If every item had a RFID tag, the smart cart could keep a running total and payment could be made using a smart phone at the exit. What could be easier for the consumer?

Investment in retail technology to enhance the shopping experience means a store being better equipped to compete with e-commerce.

The award-winning noted playwright, Ola Rotimi, in this play, takes a comic swipe at ideological misfits and opportunists who strut the ever-accomodating political landscape of contemporary Africa. A former military major, takes to politics. His motives have far more to do with vanity than patriotism, and his attempt to adapt to a situation he hardly comprehends produce highly comic results. His predicament is complicated by the unexpected arrival of his American wife who discovers two more marriages contracted without her knowledge and her husband beset by political problems.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY TO ALL OUR READERS WORLDWIDE

vintage valentine image heart with flowers
Valentine’s Day is for honoring love;
To show those we love we care.
Red hearts with tender sentiments
We send, our love to share.

So on Valentine’s Day we’re reminded
Of our very first goal according to God's commandment:
To love the Lord with all our heart
And all our mind and soul.

To love our neighbor as ourselves
We are also told to do,
So let’s live our love by the Bible;
It’s God’s word, flawless and true.

If we give this kind of God's love Valentine first,
We’ll never run out of love,
For infinite love will come to us
From God in heaven above.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY ALL

Husband & Wife bag PhD from UNILAG on the Same Day

By Adeola Adeyemo

A married couple, Olusegun Samuel and his wife, Temitope Samuel stole the show at the 50th Convocation Ceremony of the University of Lagos where they made history by becoming the first couple to bag doctorate degrees on the same day at the institution.
While Samuel did his PhD work on Marine Ecology, with a focus on Ecotoxicology- the study of how poison and chemicals affect the ecosystem, his wife focused on Dermatophyte, a group of fungi that causes skin diseases.

Samuel who joined UNILAG as a lecturer in the Faculty of Science in 2007 met Temitope at the same institution and they got married in May 2010.  Temitope on the other hand, obtained her first and second degrees at UNILAG. They are blessed with a child but decided not to have another until they complete their PhD programmes, Temitope told Punch.
We decided that we were not going to mix pleasure with business. The two don’t go together. Why should we have another baby so soon? When we got married on May 1, 2010, we both agreed on what would happen before we started our PhD programme. But now, the programme is over, we can return to that,” she said.
They said it took them a lot of hard work, sleepless nights, and huge financial resources to complete the programme.

“It took a lot of sacrifice. But since we were both involved, we were able to manage our time. Whenever I was not at home, my wife would be there. Again, at times, we worked so late on the campus that we did not get home until 11.00pm,” Samuel told Punch.
He added that  he is proud of his wife’s achievement and doesn’t feel threatened by it. “It is what we both agreed to do. I don’t feel threatened that my wife has attained the same academic feat with me. It is for the benefit of the family.”

They don’t intend to stop at a PhD but plan to pursue their post-doctoral works.

“Definitely, getting a PhD is not the end. The next thing is to pursue post-doctoral works outside the country, because there is no facilities for such in Nigeria. Then, there is the need to get our findings published in a reputable journal. For some, it costs about $500 to get published. Some may say they want to publish it free, but it may take more than two years to get published. For two years, they may tell you that they are still studying your findings,” Samuel said.

Their achievement is indeed admirable and we wish them the very best.

Just for a Laugh... The Book of AFCON 2013: Congratulations to Super Eagles, Congratulations to Nigeria...

The Book of AFCON 2013 Chapter 2 Verse 10-10
The final defeat

10. And it came to pass in the 19th year, the year after Stephen the Son of Keshi was the captain of the Eagles who defeated the Zambians.
11. That the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said "Stephen! I have put you in charge of this army therefore go forth and assign Sunday the Son of Mba a home based warrior with Jersey number 19"
12. And Stephen asked the Lord "Lord why is this so?
13. And the Lord said "Because his name is Sunday and I have anointed him with goal scoring on Sunday which is the day of the battle with Burkina Faso.
14. And Stephen hearkened to the voice of God and did as told assigning Sunday the Son of Mba a home based warrior Jersey Number 19.
15. But this caused a great stare as the people of Nigeria and NFA murmured saying "Is it this home based that will deliver us from the hands of Burkina Faso"
16. And when the day came, the final day of the battle. The armies of Burkina Faso set an ambush around the camp of the army of the Eagles. That the voice of the Lord said to Sunday the son of Mba go forth and slay the Burkinabes.
17. And Sunday said unto the Lord " Because the day of the battle is Sunday and thou hast named me Sunday and assigned to me Jersey number 19 and it is the 19th year after the final defeat of the Zambians I will go forth as thou commandeth".
18. And behold in the mist off the battle in the 40th minute, the spirit of God came upon Sunday as the performed an excellent three touch control, the 3rd entering the net of the army of the Burkinabes leading to the final defeat.
19. And the people of Nigeria and NFA rejoiced greatly and praised the Lord for the defeat of the Burkinabes and delivering the AFCON Cup into the hands of the Eagles!

Praise the Lord! Up Nigeria! Up Super Eagles! Have a blessed week ahead! :)
